Longing for La Paz

1123123

As writer Bruce Berger notes in his acclaimed 1998 book “Almost an Island,” most written work about Mexicos Baja California peninsula has focused on the regions natural wonders.

With more than 30 species of marine mammal and 500 species of fish making their homes here, some of which are found nowhere else in the world, the peninsulas Pacific and Gulf of California waters offer world – class scuba diving, snorkeling, sea – kayaking, whale – watching, fishing and recreational boating.
And then theres the otherworldly Sonoran Desert, with its banded volcanic mountains, oddly green high sierra, hidden box canyons and sweeping arroyos. The landscape proves to be a haven for mountain bikers, backpackers, hikers, RVing families, ATV devotees and those intrepid explorers bound for the celebrated Sierra de San Francisco cave paintings with local guides and mules.
Theyre all coming to experience “Baja” —that unique place of unparalleled adventure, a stunning natural juxtaposition where the desert tumbles to meet the tropical sea.

THE DUKE OF HAZARDS

THE DUKE OF HAZARDS

THINK BUSY ROADS ARE SCARY? TRY BIKE – SAFETY CLASS.
our or five times a week, I ride through the Place Where I Feel Like Im Eventually Gonna Get Hit.
Do you have one of those? The place doesnt necessarily look any different from other roads, but it just feels ominous. Mine is North Main Street. My goal when I turn onto it is to get off again fast, because its filled with distracted commuters, the bike lane sucks, theres a zombie crossing ahead… You get the idea. Plus, I have to turn left, which means entering traffic.

One day I managed to get into the turn lane early. Just as I was congratulating myself, I heard the roar of a tractor – trailer that, as I glanced back, seemed to stretch from my Connecticut town up into southern Massachusetts. As it lumbered toward me, I tried to give careful thought to the aerodynamics of what was about to happen, but all that came was the word suction, I wasnt sure how that would work, exactly, but I didnt want to find out. So I turned left immediately. Into some guys yard.

YOU GOTTA ROLL WITH IT

YOU GOTTA ROLL WITH IT

No longer confined to the fringes of the mountain bike world. 29ERS are fast becoming the norm. Roots, rocks, ruts, you name it. 29″ wheels roll right over obstacles, increasing stability, improving traction and offering a more comfortable ride in the process. Amazingly, contrary to what you may have led yourself to believe, those extra few inches do make all the difference. Dont ride against it…..roll with it.
A return to slacker geometry and new suspension technology help Treks all – mountain Remedy find its sweet spot.

Treks ABP full – floater platform is one of the best brake jack – free solutions out there, and functions superbly on the 150mm travel Remedy, which is even lighter and more capable for 2012. We tested the new carbon 9.9 on the steep mountains of Austrias Zillertal, and we came back smiling. And so we should: the new 9.9 has a ?6500 price tag that bestows it with superbike status.

The Moray Way

The Moray Way

A bike, a tent, beautiful scenery and the time to enjoy it… What more could you ask for a weekend getaway?
On any big ride over several days there are highs and lows. The harder it gets, the more extreme the swing from one to another. Sitting outside our tent on the Dava summit, I was definitely on one of the highs. The sun was setting to the northwest, with my companion Pete silhouetted against a sharp blue sky tinged with orange clouds. As the rest of the landscape lost its colour in the encroaching darkness, he drained his third cup of tea of the night, let out a satisfied sigh and threw the dregs into the undergrowth. Continuing his gaze to the horizon the world dropped back into silence.

Superb, versatile frame thats hard to beat

Superb, versatile frame thats hard to beat

Frame – only female specific bikes remain on the endangered list and yet offer the platform to build a truly customised steed. The KM220 L is a well designed frame for female cross – country and trail riders. So, if you like the female specific idea, but prefer custom specification, the KM220 L is seriously worth considering.

The facts
The successor to the KM210 L the KM220 L uses Kinesiss own enhanced 6000 series Kinesium tubing in the front triangle, with an oversized down tube and increased crown clearance in the smaller sizes. Coupled with new machined drop – outs this updated design increases stiffness without adding weight. The larger seat tube diameter accommodates a 31.6mm seat post, making dropper posts viable. It has the usual shortened top tube of female specific designs and standover height is excellent. Weights been kept down by using smaller diameter seat and chainstays, perfect for anyone but the most gear munching powerhouse. The KM220 L continues to dazzle where the KM210 L left off, with smooth TIG welds and a paint job that is feminine rather than girly. The 220 L loses the V brake mounts that the 210 L had.
